What Were the Top 10 Movies on Blu-ray in 2009?

Every year, I anxiously await the new list of the top 10 movies on blu-ray and this year's list from Sound and Vision Magazine definitely did not let me down. If you are curious as to which movies made the 2009 list, read on!

How Was This List of the Best Blu-ray Movies Assembled?

Every list is subjective and this one is no different. Sound & Vision Magazine's list is based on movies with the best sound, audio and extra features. This means that the movies on this list are NOT necessarily the biggest blockbusters and they may or may not have made top profits at the box office but what you can be sure of is that you will NOT be disappointed with the quality of these films. You will be able to thorougly enjoy watching them on your HDTV and your blu-ray player and you will be showcasing your technology to full effect.

THE TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2009

1.Up (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + BD Live) [Blu-ray]
A hugely popular and much-talked about movie, the Up blu-ray earned its spot on the top of the pile by delivering texture that you can almost touch and sound that seems almost in the room with you.
Amazon Price: $22.98
List Price: $45.99
2.The Seventh Seal (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
The Seventh Seal video is amazing with a beautiful transfer and a large assortment of features. Blu-ray.com called it perfect and, of course, highly recommended it.
Amazon Price: $22.75
List Price: $39.95
3.The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Of course we all knew that if the Wizard of Oz blu-ray was properly done, it would be amazing and, indeed it was. My only disappointment was that I was unable to buy it for Christmas unless I purchased the box set. I see that the single and triple disc packages are more readily available now.
Amazon Price: $89.99
List Price: $64.98
4.Star Trek (Three-Disc Edition) [Blu-ray]
There was no question in my mind that this top-rated movie would make Sound & Vision's list. I left the movie theatre thinking it was possibly the best movie I had ever seen and knew that it would be an amazing blu-ray disc.
Amazon Price: $23.70
List Price: $39.99
5.Coraline (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo w/ Anaglyph 3D)
Coraline is an unusual and intriguing movie and made the list based on the attention to detail you will see in the film and its amazing color.
Amazon Price: $8.97
List Price: $19.98
6.The Prisoner: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
The Prisoner was not a television series that I was familiar with before I read about it on this list. However, when I learned a bit more, I was intrigued. Research about the movie revealed that fans were extremely disappointed with the quality of the DVDs but that the blu-ray version was amazing, featuring a crisp and clear picture, great sound and focused extras.
Amazon Price: $42.99
List Price: $99.95
7.Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo + BD Live w/ Blu-ray packaging)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the most important films, in my mind, in Disney's collection, they had to get this transfer right and so they did. The blu-ray was created from the original negative from the 1930s and offers amazing sound and some very interesting extras.
Amazon Price: $36.99
List Price: $39.99
8.Slumdog Millionaire [Blu-ray]
Slumdog Millionaire, despite all of the talk and hype, was not a movie for everyone. If you enjoyed it or are wanting to check it out and see what all the fuss was about, you will be happy to learn that the blu-ray disc made this list because of the beautiful picture and wonderful sound. The bonus of extended sequences were also well received.
Amazon Price: $8.34
List Price: $24.99
9.Watchmen (Director's Cut + BD-Live) [Blu-ray]
Watchmen fans, and even people who are not overly familiar with the Watchmen but who want to see the movie, will be pleased to know that this blu-ray disc is well presented in terms of picture and sound and that it also has great extra features.
Amazon Price: $6.95
List Price: $14.98
10.Gone with the Wind (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Gone With The Wind is another film that I thought was owed the best possible treatment and Warner delivered with this, the 70th Annversary Ultimate Collector's Edition. The quality of the picture, sound and even the 14 hours of extras will leave you amazed.
Amazon Price: $87.02
List Price: $64.98

Out of this list I would have to rate Up - the whole family loved it - Slumdog was great - funny enough I remember Prisoner from years ago about a women's prison.

We Really Do Enjoy Sound & Vision Magazine & Can Highly Recommend It to Movie & Technology Fans

    Sound & Vision (1-year) [Print + Kindle]
My husband and I wrangle over Sound & Vision Magazine when a new issue is out and no, I cannot believe it. However, they have a broad selection of information including reviews on the latest technology like HDTVs and blu-ray players as well as reviews on blu-ray releases, DVD releases and even hot new music CDs. The subscription price represents a very small investment for a publication packed with helpful information. I cannot recommend it enough.
